More photos - Before, during and after.

I've highlighted some of the www.youtube.com clips of the flood. More photos are available on other sections of the blog.

If by chance, you do have a photo worth highlighting, please email me on visitbandon@gmail.com a compressed photo stating your name so I can give you the necessary credit. The photos need to be compressed so that they are suitable for web pages and their maximum size should be no larger than 100kb please. (I might use them elsewhere in due course)

We're getting there. Stay positive .... we shall overcome.

Thankfully, at the time of writing this, it appears that the back of the cleanup has been broken. This does not mean however that it is also the end of the heart-break.

People living in the affected areas have lost many of their belongings and some of these families did not have insurance.

If people have old bits of furniture, tables, chairs etc that they may be willing to donate for those in need. Could you please let me know via the visitbandon@gmail.com email address if you have something spare. We may be able to get a disposal / collection point for such items or else get it co-ordinated locally through one of the charitable groups in the town.

It is great to see so many businesses picking themselves up from a serious knock and continuing their business thus adding to the unique atmosphere of our town.

As stated before, we must do our utmost to keep our business local. The upcoming promotions from the various participating Bandon busineeses is an exciting prospect .... and even all the more important when you bear in last week's events.

Keep you business in Bandon .... keep Bandon in business!!!

Isn't technology great ... I just hope that the insurance companies will get an idea as to how bad it has been here locally and that they'll speed up writing out the compensation cheques!

Dealing with flood damage

Dealing with Flood Damage

Whether you have one inch or one foot of water in your house or business, you need to know how to clean up the mess. You should start clean up as soon as the water recedes.

Have a look at the following link:
http://www.askaboutmoney.com/showthread.php?p=963693

If you know what you're doing, then you're half way there .... if you can, do your bit for the community and help out others who may not be as 'Insurance literate' as you. Advise them to get advice!!!!

For your safety:

Be sure the electricity is turned off. In the case of severe flooding, do not use the electricity until a licensed electrician has checked your home.

When using a flashlight, turn it on prior to entering the house. Do not use matches or any type of flame until you are sure there are no gas leaks, and the area has been aired out. Check to see if the pilot light is out.

After outside flood waters have receded, drain only about 1/3 of the water in your basement initially. Outside pressure pushing against your basement walls can cause the basement walls to collapse. Start by pumping the water level down 2-3 feet, marking the level & wait overnight. If the water level goes up, wait 24 hours, and then repeat process.

Destroy all fresh or frozen food, medicine or cosmetics that have been in contact with flood water, as they may have been contaminated.
If you suspect your water supply is contaminated, have it tested.

If any appliances were touched by flood water, have them checked by a qualified serviceperson before operating them.

Cleaning Up:
Take pictures of flood damage and your clean up efforts. Photographs are extremely helpful in documenting flood damage for insurance purposes. Keep good records, including how much of your personal time was spent on debris removal and cleanup.

If carpets and floorings must be removed, take photos of everything that you are throwing out both before and after the carpet / flooring has been removed. It is a safer bet to ok the removal of these items by the assessor BEFORE throwing them out. REMEMBER - TAKE PHOTOS!!!

Record the amount of time it took you to clean up.

Use a disinfectant, such as 1 part bleach to 32 parts water, to scrub walls, floors, household items and appliances – everything that got wet. Protective gloves and appropriate eye protection should be worn. Test solution on a small discreet location to check for discoloration.

Make sure that heating systems are operable as soon as possible. You can use them to help dry out the basement. I'm hearing of contrasting advice regarding the use of dehumidifiers ... some say to leave things dry naturally as floors may crack if they dry too quickly. I'm not an expert so by all means get advice from those who know

Clean all clothing, bedding, rugs, curtains, etc. as soon as possible, disinfecting if necessary.
Clean and dry furniture and mattresses, using a bleach solution.

For the safety of your own health .... the water may have become polluted with sewerage ... hence pay extra attention to wearing gloves, disinfecting your hands, footwear and washiing all clothing with an appropriate disinfecting washing powder.

Flooded gardens:
If your lawn has been underwater for less than four days, it should survive. To help it along:
Use a rake to clean away as much silt as possible.
Break up the silt crust with a rake or aerator until the grass has recovered.

Take note of the following article to give you an idea as to how things are dealt with:

Bandon - The cleanup continues

Thankfully, at the time of writing this, the dreaded repeat of last Thursday's flooding seems a little more distant from becoming a reality .... I just hope it doesn't happen!

Despite all the heartache, it was great to see so many volunteers still helping to make a difference to so many people who live in the town and who have businesses in Bandon. The skip-hire businesses have never busier as have the various insurance assessors.

Please find below some initial thoughts on making sure that this does not happen again:

Pulling together – patience – co-ordinating public help & community effort

Emergency plans
Local emergency plans – Is there one? Who oversees it, co-ordinates and delegates? If there is one – is it public knowledge?
Centre for emergency services – Co-ordination – A designated office in a set location with basic essential services on site.
Create the position of a local Director of Emergency Services
To work in conjunction with and under the guidance of:
National emergency coordination centre
Director of emergency services
To have an agreed format to decide and delegate roles in case of emergency amongst local stakeholders. (Gardai MUST be involved in the process)
Media officer to co-ordinate any info in the public interest

Use of Groups
Network of organisations who may help
Co-ordinated network of local volunteers
One local based group (with local knowledge) to co-ordinate all efforts
Use of army, FCA and Civil Defence

Learning from this event:
Early warning system
Temporary flood barriers
EU and state funding for the above

Communication

Mobile emergency mobile number
Telecommunications – Local set of c.8 walkie-talkies.

Essential Local Activities
Clean drinking water
Power
People displaced – Co-ordinating of a list of names, where they have moved from and moved to.
Public health notices – Boiling water – Spraying disinfectant – Tetanus injection – Setting of poison for rats & mice
Delivery of water to elderly
Ensuring those living alone have been visited

It is now more than ever that our public representatives must put aside their differences and work together to ensure that people can get back to a normal life as soon as possible. We need support through finance, advice to set in mtion a system that will help the town the next time such an event lilke this occurs again.

Bandon - Flooding causes havoc

Bandon Floods – An update 21/11/09 @ 12.40pm
Bandon – the Venice that we weren’t looking for!

'I have limited access to the intenet as the local telephone lines are down .. please note that despite my best intentions, I may not be able to update this on a regular basis.'

Yes, Bandon is suffering some of the worst flooding in living memory. Despite valiant efforts by so many local groups and volunteers, the Bandon River burst its banks on Thursday afternoon causing floods throughout the town.

Routes in and out of the general area have been severely affected.

Advice has been issued by the Gardai not to travel in the area unless you really must. Even the Garda station had to be abandoned due to the flooding. Drive with care. Be careful with driving through flooded routes .. do not cause a ‘wave’ as you drive through deep water.

One important suggestion for those travelling to and from Cork is use the Kinsale – Ballinadee route:

Innishannon has the roadworks and Crossbarry has been prone to flooding. I've commuted via the Ballinadee route and once you're not in a hurry and drive at a respectable speed - the journey should have minimal delays.

Unfortunately there is now an element of irony with the naming of the Riverview Shopping Centre as the car park has been under 3 feet of water. South Main St has been hit with flooding from the base of the steps of St Peter’s Church through the length and breadth of the town.

Ballylangley, the Mart area, Irishtown and out by Cahalane’s garage on the main Bandon to Cork route have all been hit badly. The area by the Munster Arms Hotel has also been under 4 feet of water as has the area by the Old Post Office and the Allin Institute.

It was gut-wrenching to see business people in tears with worry on Thursady evening. They simply didn't know how bad things would get. It was shocking to see the carnage in the town yesterday with busineeses simply 'flooded out'of it. The Bandon Office Supplies company were hit by water at a height of six feet, three inches. Some businesses in the centre of town have had their Christmas stock flooded.

Where do we go from here???
Now, more than ever is it time for our politicial leaders to stand up and be counted. They must do their utmost to ease the burden on the people and business owners of the town. Is there EU / Government funding for such disasters like this? Can the insurance companies set up a temporary office to help deal with insurance calims?

Local people need to support their own local firms now more than ever. We have recently seen a marketing campaign to 'Keep you business in Bandon - Keep Bandon in business' ..... there has never been a more appropriate phrase to use than now.

On a personal note, for those who have suffered a loss, our thoughts and best wishes are with you. Despite all the heartache, it has been heart-warming to see the level of support, the work of volunteers and the various state services coming together to help create a difference. While at the time of writing this, it may seem that we are 'not out of the woods yet' with the expected poor weather for the next few days ... let's hope that things don't get any worse.

Regards,

T Collins
